GRADE REPORT ON USING THE NATIONAL LANGUAGE URDU:

Who abuses “Urdlish” (Urdu corrupted with English words)?

Updated and revised March 23rd, 2008.

This Grade report will be updated in English and Urdu on a periodic basis and changed when warranted. Kindly give us feedback. (My PDMS Jauhar quit working, and thier technical support is worse than zero)

Great nations take pride in their ethnicity and their national language. Pakistanis also do that. However the convent bred Pakistani elite is unable to communicate with the masses because they do not speak the language of the masses. It is scandalous that girls schools like “Jesus and Mary Convent” and others continue to produce functionally illiterate and operationally alienated Pakistanis who are only useful for the West.

AIt is abominable that state organs and the media of Pakistan work against the integrity of Pakistan by working in foreign languages and making them look “cool”. The hosts who speak in English are not cool, they are disgusting, should not be tolerated and should learn Urdu and the local languages.

A language brings in cultural unity and builds a distinct culture. The Devanagri script was imposed on the Subcontinent creating a language partition between the religions. The French have special laws for the preservation of their language. Saying “Bon ‘weekend ” is illegal on French TV. Putting up a sign in English in Quebec will get you a hefty fine. These are steps taken to preserve the linguistic identity and create a French language different from the Anglo-Saxon English. In Israel a dead language called Hebrew was resurrected and all Israelis now speak it.

UrduSiraj ud Daulah one of the heros of the SubcontinentURDU WAS LANGUAGE IN BENGAL, DELHI, HYDRABAD. BIHAR, KASHMIR, SIALKOT, LAHORE etc:When Lord Clive came to Bengal the language he encountered was Urdu. Until 1843 the court and national language of Bengal was Urdu and Farsi. Alama Iqbal and thousands others flourished in Sialkot in a culture of official and unofficial Urdu. To the chagrin of Muslim Bengalis and Muslims of the Subcontinent Urdu was removed from Bengal by the Bengalisof Calcutta. At this juncture the All India Muslim League was formed. The Muslim agitation in 1906 for the partition of Bengal was to create a separate Muslim Bengal province with Urdu as its language. Similarly the Punjab, the heart of Pakistan chose Urdu instead of Gurmukhi for its language. Baluchistan, Sarhad and Sindh in the constituent assemblies and all national assemblies have voted for Urdu as the national language and the provincial language. Sacrifices were made for the creation of Pakistan and for creating the national language.

IqbalIQBAL WOULD SHED TEARS ON THE STATUS OF HIS FAVORITE LANGUAGE: Alama Iqbal would be sad to see the condition of our national language. Quaid e Azam would be sad to see our government neglecting Urdu. We owe it to our founding fathers (and founding mother) to preserve the language that we have chosen for our land. Due to apathy and wrong information our national language is being impacted. Lame reasons are given not to implement this constitutional requirement. The History of Urdu and other language systems is posted on this site.

“Mimicking Benazir Bhutto’s Urdu is a good way to revive the party when the conversation runs dry,” Washington-based Yawar Herekar wrote in a letter to a local newspaper.

“It has been over 60 years since the end of the British Raj but they left the English language behind as a curse and blessing for us. English might be the language of business, but Urdu is the language that holds our history and serves as our identity.

“As Pakistanis, we need to be proud of our mother tongue and get rid of our colonialist mindset before it destroys our culture from the insides,” he added on a more serious note.

At a joint press conference with former premier Nawaz Sharif on Monday night, Bhutto struggled to put forth her views to the media in Urdu.

“Kayee demands kuboool kiye gaye hain, date of elections diya gaya hai, emergency khatm kee gayee hai…emergency khatm karne ka date diya gaya hai… Yeh bahut significant acceptance hai,” she said.

Cross-dressing TV host Ali Saleem, famous for mimicking Bhutto, plays the former premier in a video posted on Yahoo.

Though Saleem’s “hum courage nahin loosenge” and “promises fullfillinge” are exaggerated examples of her Urdu, Bhutto often makes grammatical errors and mixes up genders in her speeches.

Bhutto’s incorrect Urdu has been noticed by the Western press too. “Her English may be fluent, but you can’t say the same about her Urdu, which she speaks like a well-groomed foreigner: fluently but ungrammatically. Her Sindhi is even worse,” said a report in Australian newspaper The Age.

Another paper described her as “an enlightened leader” who could bring democracy back to Pakistan. “Part of her appeal is her westerness. This comes naturally. English is her first language. Her command of Urdu is far from perfect.”

Criticizing Pakistan’s new language policy, which encourages instruction in English at a very early level, Masoodsaid: “A world-class command of Urdu with an ability to appreciate the skill of its writers and poets is undoubtedly good for the soul. But what seems to count for more in 21st-century Pakistan is that fluency in English is good for the CV.”

-Monkey say, monkey do!But it isn’t just Bhutto who is being accused of killing the cause of Urdu. Her bete noire President Pervez Musharraf is also believed to be a sinner.

Ehsan Masood, a London-based journalist, pointed out that “the current generation of politicians are not at all comfortable in Urdu. For the ‘Daughter of the East’ that she claims to be, Bhutto penned her autobiography in English; as more recently did the General In the Line of Fire” .

Musharraf’s one-liners, especially the ones from his speech in Urdu after the imposition of emergency on November 3 — “mera total control thha”, “Islamabad mein extremist bharay houay hain” and “Extremism bahut extreme ho gaya hai” – have been widely circulated in internet jokes.

CONSTITUTIONAL STATUS OF URDU IN PAKISTAN: The Constituent Assembly of Pakistan as well as the Provincial Assemblies of Punjab, Kahsmir, Sarhad, Baluchsitan, and Sindh voted for Urdu as the national language of Pakistan. The provincial assemblies also voted for Urdu as the provincial languages of the provinces. According to the Constitution of Pakistan Urdu should have been fully implemented in Pakistan by 1999.

Constitution of PakistanArticle 251(1): “The National Language of Pakistan is Urdu and arrangements shall be made for it being used for official and other purposes within fifteen years from the commencing day.”

THE INCOMPETENT NATIONAL LANGUAGE AUTHORITY: It is sad to see Urdu words in English on the “National Language Authority” website (http://www.nla.gov.pk/). All emails directed to the staff bounced. The site is rudimentary and depicts incompetence on the part of the department. The new alphabet is ridiculous and has now been removed. The website is even more pathetic than the earlier one and has less information on the site. All products have now been removed. The department (National Language Authority, H-8/4, Pitras Bokhari Road, Islamabad Pakistan, Ph: 051-9250311-9250312, Fax: 051-9250310- nlauit@apollo.net.pk) should be challenged to keep a vigil on the media, newspapers and general names of departments. Where is the “National Language Authority?

ENGLISH TO URDU DICTIONARY SITES WHICH WE RECOMMEND:Online websites like those listed here should be improved:

These are a great assets to all Urdu lovers on the planet. In Pakistan Idara e Adbiat Pakistan has done a fantastic job. However it is ignored by the media. In India the Muslim community of Hyderabad and institutions like Urdu Academy, Idara-e-Adabiyat-e-Urdu, Anjuman-e-Tarraqi-e-Urdu, and several Urdu newspapers such as “Siaset”, “Munsif” and “Awam” are engaged in an ongoing vigilance to maintain the status of Urdu as an important medium of instruction and of communication.

NATIONAL AND PROVINWestern Intelligence AgenciesL LANGUAGES DETERIORATING: A Language emergency needs to be declared immediately. Today the Pakistani National and provincial languages are deteriorating under the onslaught of English. We must take steps to preserve the language and build our provincial languages. It is a constitutional violation to continue to use English by the government of Pakistan. This apathy impacts our national unity.

Where is the departments that guards Urdu in Pakistan?

PAKISTANI POLITIWestern Intelligence AgenciesNS WEAK IN COMMUNICATION:

Poor communicaiton skillsOne of the basic criteria for politicians is speech. Communication skills are important to get the message across. Many American leaders take speech and accent lessons. Why are Pakistani politicians so poor in communication skills? Almost all of them need tutors. The students of the Department of Urdu at the University of Moscow speak better English than most of our politicians and TV and Radio anchors.

PTVThe Constituent Assembly of Pakistan as well as the Provincial Assemblies of Punjab, Kahsmir, Sarhad, Baluchsitan, and Sindh voted for Urdu as the national language of Pakistan. According to the Constitution of Pakistan Urdu should have been fully implemented in Pakistan by 1999.PTV is the worst offender. Even the name is in English. Compare to a beautiful word coined in India “Door Darshan”. It is sad to see PTV news anchors and hosts speak gibberish with foreign words like “headlines” and “reports”. It is nauseating and constantly speak in English with horrible accents. If we wanted to watch the news in English, surely we could watch CNN, BBC and a host of other channels.

PTV gets an “F”

The news readers and anchors should not use English words. Maybe the TV stations can buy them English-to-Urdu dictionaries. Or alternatively they can hire tutors for them.

All Pakistani channels including Geo and ARY should hold 30 second slots to translate English words that have crept into our language. For example use “mutuam” vs restaurant.

Geo and ARY are fantastic channel and Pakistanis watch it all the time. However, when Pakistanis want to watch Pakistani TV, they want to watch and listen to Urdu. Geo and ARY are better than PTV on this account.

PUSHTO, HINDKOH, BALUCHI, POTOHARI,SINDHI, PUSHTO, DARRI and PUNJABI SONGS:

It is fantastic that PTV has now created provincial language channels. However English is omnipresent on those channels also. We all love Punjabi songs. Punjab is our life blood and Punjabi is near and dear to us. The music is fantastic. The Punjabi culture is magnanimous. However PTV being a national channel, the singers should also sing Mekrani, Sindhi, Potohari, and Baluchi, and Pushto songs? The PTV singers can use Pushto, Saraiki, and Darri words in their songs to make all Pakistanis feel at home. Either sing only Urdu songs, or sing in all languages of Pakistan.

2) Help improve the websites that translate English words to Urdu.

3) Take the politicians to task when they use English words.
