GRADE REPORT ON USING THE NATIONAL LANGUAGE URDU:
Who abuses “Urdlish” (Urdu corrupted with English words)?
Updated and revised March 23rd, 2008.
This Grade report will be updated in English and Urdu on a periodic basis and changed when warranted. Kindly give us feedback. (My PDMS Jauhar quit working, and thier technical support is worse than zero)
Great nations take pride in their ethnicity and their national language. Pakistanis also do that. However the convent bred Pakistani elite is unable to communicate with the masses because they do not speak the language of the masses. It is scandalous that girls schools like “Jesus and Mary Convent” and others continue to produce functionally illiterate and operationally alienated Pakistanis who are only useful for the West.
AIt is abominable that state organs and the media of Pakistan work against the integrity of Pakistan by working in foreign languages and making them look “cool”. The hosts who speak in English are not cool, they are disgusting, should not be tolerated and should learn Urdu and the local languages.
A language brings in cultural unity and builds a distinct culture. The Devanagri script was imposed on the Subcontinent creating a language partition between the religions. The French have special laws for the preservation of their language. Saying “Bon ‘weekend ” is illegal on French TV. Putting up a sign in English in Quebec will get you a hefty fine. These are steps taken to preserve the linguistic identity and create a French language different from the Anglo-Saxon English. In Israel a dead language called Hebrew was resurrected and all Israelis now speak it.
URDU WAS LANGUAGE IN BENGAL, DELHI, HYDRABAD. BIHAR, KASHMIR, SIALKOT, LAHORE etc:When Lord Clive came to Bengal the language he encountered was Urdu. Until 1843 the court and national language of Bengal was Urdu and Farsi. Alama Iqbal and thousands others flourished in Sialkot in a culture of official and unofficial Urdu. To the chagrin of Muslim Bengalis and Muslims of the Subcontinent Urdu was removed from Bengal by the Bengalisof Calcutta. At this juncture the All India Muslim League was formed. The Muslim agitation in 1906 for the partition of Bengal was to create a separate Muslim Bengal province with Urdu as its language. Similarly the Punjab, the heart of Pakistan chose Urdu instead of Gurmukhi for its language. Baluchistan, Sarhad and Sindh in the constituent assemblies and all national assemblies have voted for Urdu as the national language and the provincial language. Sacrifices were made for the creation of Pakistan and for creating the national language.
IQBAL WOULD SHED TEARS ON THE STATUS OF HIS FAVORITE LANGUAGE: Alama Iqbal would be sad to see the condition of our national language. Quaid e Azam would be sad to see our government neglecting Urdu. We owe it to our founding fathers (and founding mother) to preserve the language that we have chosen for our land. Due to apathy and wrong information our national language is being impacted. Lame reasons are given not to implement this constitutional requirement. The History of Urdu and other language systems is posted on this site.
“Mimicking Benazir Bhutto’s Urdu is a good way to revive the party when the conversation runs dry,” Washington-based Yawar Herekar wrote in a letter to a local newspaper.
“It has been over 60 years since the end of the British Raj but they left the English language behind as a curse and blessing for us. English might be the language of business, but Urdu is the language that holds our history and serves as our identity.
“As Pakistanis, we need to be proud of our mother tongue and get rid of our colonialist mindset before it destroys our culture from the insides,” he added on a more serious note.
At a joint press conference with former premier Nawaz Sharif on Monday night, Bhutto struggled to put forth her views to the media in Urdu.
“Kayee demands kuboool kiye gaye hain, date of elections diya gaya hai, emergency khatm kee gayee hai…emergency khatm karne ka date diya gaya hai… Yeh bahut significant acceptance hai,” she said.
Cross-dressing TV host Ali Saleem, famous for mimicking Bhutto, plays the former premier in a video posted on Yahoo.
Though Saleem’s “hum courage nahin loosenge” and “promises fullfillinge” are exaggerated examples of her Urdu, Bhutto often makes grammatical errors and mixes up genders in her speeches.
Bhutto’s incorrect Urdu has been noticed by the Western press too. “Her English may be fluent, but you can’t say the same about her Urdu, which she speaks like a well-groomed foreigner: fluently but ungrammatically. Her Sindhi is even worse,” said a report in Australian newspaper The Age.
Another paper described her as “an enlightened leader” who could bring democracy back to Pakistan. “Part of her appeal is her westerness. This comes naturally. English is her first language. Her command of Urdu is far from perfect.”
Criticizing Pakistan’s new language policy, which encourages instruction in English at a very early level, Masoodsaid: “A world-class command of Urdu with an ability to appreciate the skill of its writers and poets is undoubtedly good for the soul. But what seems to count for more in 21st-century Pakistan is that fluency in English is good for the CV.”
But it isn’t just Bhutto who is being accused of killing the cause of Urdu. Her bete noire President Pervez Musharraf is also believed to be a sinner.
Ehsan Masood, a London-based journalist, pointed out that “the current generation of politicians are not at all comfortable in Urdu. For the ‘Daughter of the East’ that she claims to be, Bhutto penned her autobiography in English; as more recently did the General In the Line of Fire” .
Musharraf’s one-liners, especially the ones from his speech in Urdu after the imposition of emergency on November 3 — “mera total control thha”, “Islamabad mein extremist bharay houay hain” and “Extremism bahut extreme ho gaya hai” – have been widely circulated in internet jokes.

CONSTITUTIONAL STATUS OF URDU IN PAKISTAN: The Constituent Assembly of Pakistan as well as the Provincial Assemblies of Punjab, Kahsmir, Sarhad, Baluchsitan, and Sindh voted for Urdu as the national language of Pakistan. The provincial assemblies also voted for Urdu as the provincial languages of the provinces. According to the Constitution of Pakistan Urdu should have been fully implemented in Pakistan by 1999.
Article 251(1): “The National Language of Pakistan is Urdu and arrangements shall be made for it being used for official and other purposes within fifteen years from the commencing day.”
THE INCOMPETENT NATIONAL LANGUAGE AUTHORITY: It is sad to see Urdu words in English on the “National Language Authority” website (http://www.nla.gov.pk/). All emails directed to the staff bounced. The site is rudimentary and depicts incompetence on the part of the department. The new alphabet is ridiculous and has now been removed. The website is even more pathetic than the earlier one and has less information on the site. All products have now been removed. The department (National Language Authority, H-8/4, Pitras Bokhari Road, Islamabad Pakistan, Ph: 051-9250311-9250312, Fax: 051-9250310- nlauit@apollo.net.pk) should be challenged to keep a vigil on the media, newspapers and general names of departments. Where is the “National Language Authority?”
ENGLISH TO URDU DICTIONARY SITES WHICH WE RECOMMEND:Online websites like those listed here should be improved:
-
(http://www.ijunoon.com/urdudic/index.asp?mode=empty) This is great.
These are a great assets to all Urdu lovers on the planet. In Pakistan Idara e Adbiat Pakistan has done a fantastic job. However it is ignored by the media. In India the Muslim community of Hyderabad and institutions like Urdu Academy, Idara-e-Adabiyat-e-Urdu, Anjuman-e-Tarraqi-e-Urdu, and several Urdu newspapers such as “Siaset”, “Munsif” and “Awam” are engaged in an ongoing vigilance to maintain the status of Urdu as an important medium of instruction and of communication.
NATIONAL AND PROVINWestern Intelligence AgenciesL LANGUAGES DETERIORATING: A Language emergency needs to be declared immediately. Today the Pakistani National and provincial languages are deteriorating under the onslaught of English. We must take steps to preserve the language and build our provincial languages. It is a constitutional violation to continue to use English by the government of Pakistan. This apathy impacts our national unity.
Where is the departments that guards Urdu in Pakistan?
PAKISTANI POLITIWestern Intelligence AgenciesNS WEAK IN COMMUNICATION:
One of the basic criteria for politicians is speech. Communication skills are important to get the message across. Many American leaders take speech and accent lessons. Why are Pakistani politicians so poor in communication skills? Almost all of them need tutors. The students of the Department of Urdu at the University of Moscow speak better English than most of our politicians and TV and Radio anchors.
Prime Minister of Pakistan Mr. Gillani gets a “C” for his communicationskills in the National Language Urdu. جناب کو اردئ نھیں آتي

Benazir Bhutto:“F”. She had been in politics for a decade and did not learn the National language of Pakistan. Her Urdu accent and speech was really horrible. Her Convent bred English was not fantastic either. Her book has an 8th grade English vocabulary. If she really wanted to she could write her speech in Romanized Urdu and rehearse it and then read it in Urdu. Her mother was Persian. She had no excuses. The nation was sick of her “karay hainnn!?”It is beyond humorous now. May God Bless her soul! اردئ نھیں آتي
Bilawal Bhutto the new leader of the PPP is weak in Urdu and gets a FFF اردئ نھیں آتي
Fatima Bhutto. Brilliant but estranged to PPP granddaughter of Zulfiqar and niece of Benazir. She not only can speak Urdu, she also writes in Urdu. Possibly the most proficient Bhutto in the land. اچھي اردو بولتي ھین

Babar Awan gets an A+.Babar Awan speaks superb Urdu and then translates any English word into Urdu that he may inadvertently have allowed to slip out
۔ بھت اچھي اردو بہلتے ھيیں
Sherry Rehman of the PPP gets a “B”. She gets an “A+” on her communication skills, is eloquent, and we wish she was nominated as the PM. She tries. She also gets an “A+” for class. اچھي اردو بولتي ھی
Pervez Musharraf: He gets a “C”. He speaks a mixture of Urdu and English. Growing up in the Punjab he should know fluent Punjabi. Mr. President, you need an Urdu tutor or get a translator to speak in Punjabi or Urdu۔ اردو آتي ھے
Imran Khan gets a “C”: The self acclaimed super patriot speaks a mixture of Urdu and Convent bred English. He has improved a lot. In 1980 he could not speak any Urdu at all. Imran Khan you need an Urdu tutor or get a translator to speak in Punjabi or Urdu. HW Assignment: Can you not find the Urdu word for “Hero”. Hint it is “bahadur” “ghazi”, “shajah”۔ اردو آتي ھے

MEDIA
GRADE REPORT ON URDU NEWSPAPERS ON USING URDU: FFFFF
Jang, Nawai Waqt, Musawat, Mashriq and Jasaratetc all have a horrible record on using English words written in Urdu. The standard or Urdu in the newspapers is atrocious, and degrading. The Editors are lazy and the script writers “jamm” all news headlines on the front page making it very difficult to read. There are few if any graphics or maps or charts. Online versions are obsolete, archaic and do not use the latest RSS and feedback technology. Emails are not acknowledged. Urdu newspapers from Hydrabad used better Urdu diction and language without using English words.
Mashriq gets a “FF”
Masawat gets “FFF”
Jasarat gets “F”
GRADE REPORT ON RADIO PAKISTAN ON USING URDU:
It is sad that even the name of the organization is in English. Many have tried to use the magnificent Urdu word “La Silki“, but Radio Pakistan refuses to use Urdu words.
GRADE REPORT ON TELEVISION:On using the National Language: PEMRA should take action.
PTV is the worst offender. Even the name is in English. Compare to a beautiful word coined in India “Door Darshan”. It is sad to see PTV news anchors and hosts speak gibberish with foreign words like “headlines” and “reports”. It is nauseating and constantly speak in English with horrible accents. If we wanted to watch the news in English, surely we could watch CNN, BBC and a host of other channels.
PTV gets an “F”
The news readers and anchors should not use English words. Maybe the TV stations can buy them English-to-Urdu dictionaries. Or alternatively they can hire tutors for them.
All Pakistani channels including Geo and ARY should hold 30 second slots to translate English words that have crept into our language. For example use “mutuam” vs restaurant.
Geo and ARY are fantastic channel and Pakistanis watch it all the time. However, when Pakistanis want to watch Pakistani TV, they want to watch and listen to Urdu. Geo and ARY are better than PTV on this account.
National Language Authority of Pakistan.
Geo gets a “B”. Why does Geo have titles like “Geo News” (“Khabrain”, “Akhbar”, “Khabar” are alternatives) or Geo Business (“Karobar” is an alternative). Why doesn’t GEO use words like “Surkhian?”
Some anchors, and hosts use Urdu words very intelligently and are adept it. It is a pleasure to hear good Urdu.
GEO NEWS the new channel gets an “F”
Kamran Khan is really good on this. He gets an “A”
Khursheed Nadeem of “Alif” gets an “A plus”.
The morning shows speak too much English (Nadia Khan). She gets a “C”.
Kashif Abbasi gets a “B” for using too much English
The worst offender on Geo is Javed Malik and his use of the Sanskrit term “asheerwad“. He speaks too much English
Hamid Mir gets a “B” on Urdu and “D” on using English.
Dr. ShahidMahmud gets an “A” on Urdu.
Aaaj gets a “B”. Talat Husein gets a “B”. We await its transmission to the USA, Canada and the UK etc.
Why does ARY call it “News“? “Khabrain”, “Akhbar”, “Khabar”are alternatives. ARY Business could be ARY “Karobar“. ARY can use Urdu words like “Surkhian?”
Marina Khan is especially horrible in Urdu. She gets an “C”.
Ms. Shaista Wahidi of bakhabarsavera.tv gets a “B”. She knows Urdu well, but uses English.
Ms. Faiza Dawood gets a “B” for using too many English words. She knows good Urdu but uses English words.
Criminals Most Wanted: Why is the program’s name in English? The host speaks horrible English. He gets a “C”
BUILD THE PROVINWestern Intelligence AgenciesL LANGUAGES:
PUSHTO, HINDKOH, BALUCHI, POTOHARI,SINDHI, PUSHTO, DARRI and PUNJABI SONGS:
It is fantastic that PTV has now created provincial language channels. However English is omnipresent on those channels also. We all love Punjabi songs. Punjab is our life blood and Punjabi is near and dear to us. The music is fantastic. The Punjabi culture is magnanimous. However PTV being a national channel, the singers should also sing Mekrani, Sindhi, Potohari, and Baluchi, and Pushto songs? The PTV singers can use Pushto, Saraiki, and Darri words in their songs to make all Pakistanis feel at home. Either sing only Urdu songs, or sing in all languages of Pakistan.
UNIVERSITIES: It is to be remembered that the English word “Colligiate” has its origins in the Arabic “Kulliat“. Not a single Pakistani college uses the word “Kulliat”. Amazingly the Federal Urdu University also uses the English moniker to describe itself on its website.
WORST GOVERNMENT PUBLIC DEPARTMENT IN USAGE OF URDU:
The worst offender is “Election Commission of Pakistan“. How about “Idara e Intekhab, Hakootmat e Pakistan“. Writing “Government of Pakistan” in Urdu is the height of illiteracy. Why can’t the departments write Hakootmat e Pakistan”
Most Pakistani Departments use English or describe themselves withno attempt at using the national language. This is disgraceful.
Army:All leadership belonging to the army should be very proficient in the national language. Army professionals break into English as if it was their mother tongue. Why has the army not been able to shed its colonial past? We have had 60 years to develop our own army culture which will be hard to translate in case of messages being passed. Pakistani “Fauj keh jawan” should be using Urdu in Kakul and cadet colleges.
NATIONAL ASSEMBLY AND SENATE GET AN “F”.
Both words in “National Assembly” are in English and represent the French “Assembly Nacionale” and the Roman (now American Senate. Iranians call their Parliament “Mujlis“. President Zia ul Haq used to call the National Assembly “Majlis e Shura“. At the very least the National Assembly should be called “Qaumi Majlis” and the Senate should be called “Aiwan e Bala“.
PAKISTAN INTERNATIONAL AIRLINES: PIA has an English name. Amazingly it does not have a name in Urdu name? PIA gets “FFFF”. Pakistan International Airlines has a ridiculous name and a horrible logo everything is in English. It does not represent Pakistan in any way. “PIA” written in Urdu is a joke. International in Urdu in Bainul Aqwami and Airlines in Urdu is Hawapamai. Therefore the Urdu logo should say “Bay Heh Pay”
PAKISTANI BUSINESS ESTABLISHMENTS
RESTAURANTS ARE THE WORST OFFENDERS:
Pakistani eating places are usually called “Restaurants“. The Urdu word is “Tayum Khana” “Mutaam Khana”, “Mutaam Mahal” or simply “Mutaam“. These words are never used.
All get an “F”.
THE INEFFECTUAL NATIONAL LANGUAGE AUTHORITY: The Total Failure of the inept Chairman: Prof. Fateh Muhammad Malik of the National Language Authority of Pakistan.
“The department with the charter to preserve Urdu has bean a total failure. Their website defines the following charter: http://www.nla.gov.pk/duties_files/slide0001.htm
1.To consider ways and means for the promotion of Urdu as the National Language of Pakistan and to make all necessary arrangements in this regard to submit recommendations to the Prime Minister for expediting the use of the National Language.
2.To facilitate introduction of Urdu as the Official language throughout the country by developing dictionaries and other reading materials for in-service training of the personnel working in Government/ Semi-Government Offices, Courts and other Institutions.
3.To coordinate the work of all Urdu
4.To facilitate the adoption of Urdu as the language to be used in all Competitive Examinations, in cooperation with the Federal and Provincial Public Service Commissions Development Boards.
5.To carry out such other responsibilities as the Prime Minister may entrust to the Authority in regard to the promotion of the National Language.
None of the above mentioned goals have been met properly!
URDU ORIGINS TO THE EARLIEST LANGUAGES
WHAT SHOULD WE DO TO IMPROVE THE CONDITION OF OUR NATIONAL LANGUAGE?
1) Make a list of English words used by politicians, news anchors, and personalities, and immediately call the network, or send them a letter, or email with a correction.
2) Help improve the websites that translate English words to Urdu.
3) Take the politicians to task when they use English words.
4) Improve our own language by making sure we do not use English words in our our daily cooperation.
URDU IS A GREAT UNIFYING FACTOR: The “Departments of Urdu” of Pakistani Universities should cooperate with “Urdu Departments” of all universities of the world.
For more details see Article son Urdu and the Indus Valley Civilization on this site
FEROZESONS LUGGAT (dictionary): I was appalled to read the English to Urdu dictionary. The translation for Restaurant was (aisa hotel jahan khana kha suktey hain). Instead of translating restaurant to mutuam or tuam khana Ferozesons took the easy street route without any discussion with academia.
